It's still too soon to compare LaDainian Tomlinson's and Thomas Jones' contracts.

But we're getting closer.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the New York Jets gave Tomlinson a two-year deal worth $5.1 million. The Kansas City Chiefs signed Jones to a two-year deal worth $5 million. Jones reportedly gave the Jets a chance to match, but they passed.

On the surface, it seems -- as I mentioned in the previous blog -- the Jets have some explaining to do. Jones rushed for twice as many yards and two more touchdowns last season.

But we don't know how Tomlinson's contract breaks down yet. Jones reportedly will get $3 million in the first year, while Tomlinson's pact might be backloaded, which would allow the Jets to cut ties inexpensively after 2010.

We'll find out soon enough.
