An NFL source informs me the New York Jets' interest in Terrell Owens is "very minimal," but confirmed they have considered the possibility of signing the future Hall of Fame receiver.

Owens
While most of us compete in fantasy football leagues, Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum keeps looking at ways to add real superstars to a glitzy roster.

Adam Schefter first reported the development for ESPN. The Jets reached out to Owens' agent, Drew Rosenhaus, to see what the asking price and interest level might be.

Owens certainly would be forced into a subordinate role with the Jets. New York already has three 1,000-yard receivers in Braylon Edwards, Santonio Holmes and Jerricho Cotchery.

But the NFL has suspended Holmes for the first four games, and head coach Rex Ryan never seems satisfied with his roster. Owens' impact would be diminished amid the receiver talent already on the roster, but he would be another weapon.

ESPNNewYork.com's Rich Cimini presented five strong reasons why Owens would be a disaster for the Jets.
  • Another big personality would impact an already unsettled chemistry.
  • More pressure on young quarterback Mark Sanchez.
  • A circus atmosphere that would be entertaining for "Hard Knocks," but not ideal for season preparations.
  • The wrong message to the veterans who wants new contracts: cornerback Darrelle Revis, center Nick Mangold and linebacker David Harris.
  • Owens is in decline and not an impact player anymore.

I see both sides, but tend to believe Owens would be more beneficial than detrimental for the Jets. He would know what he's getting into with the already-loaded Jets, meaning that by merely signing the contract he would be willing to accept an ancillary role for the chance to win a Super Bowl.

Owens was on his best behavior with the Buffalo Bills last year and didn't create any distractions. But he also had the worst full season of his career on a bad team. How many quality touches could Owens expect, 45?
