A couple of days after we learned the New York Jets showed a passing interest in receiver Terrell Owens, they are close to bringing back old friend Laveranues Coles for a third stint.

Coles
ESPNNewYork.com's Rich Cimini reports Coles will work for the Jets on Friday. If all goes well, they are expected to sign him to help get them through Santonio Holmes' four-game suspension at the start of the regular season.

Coles, 32, spent last season with the Cincinnati Bengals, who signed Owens this week. Coles finished third on the team with 43 receptions, 514 yards and five interceptions.

He had 70 catches and a team-high seven touchdowns for the Jets in 2008, but he would return as their fourth receiver behind Holmes, Braylon Edwards and Jerricho Cotchery.

The Jets are a much different club since Coles last wore their colors. He hasn't played under head coach Rex Ryan, hasn't caught a pass from Mark Sanchez and hasn't shared a locker room with Shonn Greene, LaDainian Tomlinson, Bart Scott, Jason Taylor, Antonio Cromartie ...

Coles likely would be limited once Holmes returns to the field. After that, his role might be more along the lines of sideline cheerleader.
