Dolphins grab CB Davis ahead of Butler

Sorry, Mr. Butler. Either you didn't hear correctly, or you were lied to.

The father of Connecticut cornerback Darius Butler told the South Florida Sun-Sentinel the Miami Dolphins promised to take his son if he was available at No. 25.

Butler was on the board. Problem was, the best pure corner in the draft still was there, too.

The Dolphins selected Illinois cornerback Vontae Davis. He was considered the second-best defensive back in this year's draft class behind Ohio State, who might play safety in the NFL.

Davis gives Miami something it hasn't had in a long while, a young corner to groom for the future. The Dolphins have been turning over veteran free agents at that position for almost a decade.

Many thought the Dolphins would take a receiver, but when the Oakland Raiders reached for Darrius Heyward-Bey seventh overall, the receiver pool was even shallower at No. 25.

Either way, Davis would have been too tough to pass up -- much to Mr. Butler's chagrin.
