BradyPeter King, attributing the information to Patriots owner Robert Kraft, first reported the deal for NBC during halftime of Thursday night's game between the Minnesota Vikings and New Orleans Saints. ESPN's Adam Schefter added the deal is worth $72 million with $48.5 million in guarantees.
Kraft told King the paperwork had been filed with the league and the deal should be official Friday.
Brady escaped serious injury Thursday morning when he was involved in a car crash on his way to Patriots practice. His Audi T-boned a minivan that ran a red light in Boston. The impact was bad enough that the Jaws of Life were needed to extract an injured passenger from the minivan. Brady walked away and was able to practice.
As I wrote earlier, the accident could've affected Brady's lingering contract problem. Brady was entering the final year of his deal and hadn't been able to procure an extension.
We may never know what impact the accident had on the timing of the contract, but the averted calamity had to give Brady and the Patriots plenty to think about throughout the day.
