Josh McCown is becoming the Gaylord Perry of the NFL on his way to wearing every uniform in the league.
The Miami Dolphins on Friday traded McCown to the Carolina Panthers for an undisclosed draft pick. It would be McCown's fifth NFL team and fourth in three years.
The move suggests the Dolphins have decided to keep John Beck as their third QB, although they'll likely comb the waiver wire for other alternatives before they finalize their roster.
McCown was a part-time starter during his four seasons with the Arizona Cardinals. He spent 2006 with the Detroit Lions but didn't throw a pass. McCown started nine games for the Oakland Raiders last year.
He signed a two-year contract with the Dolphins in March because he thought it afforded him the best opportunity to call a team his own.
But the surprisingly mature play of rookie Chad Henne and then the Aug. 9 acquisition of veteran Chad Pennington marginalized McCown, who didn't take a snap in the final three preseason games.
