Patriots apologists who insisted Welker's comments were coincidental and didn't allude to Jets head coach Rex Ryan's purported foot fetish should read Welker's quotes now.
While waiting in the San Francisco airport for his flight to Hawaii, where Welker will play in the Pro Bowl, he told Boston Herald reporter Karen Guregian he regretted his decision to make fun of Ryan and his wife.
Patriots coach Bill Belichick, upset that Welker had disobeyed an order to not engage with the trash-talking Jets, benched Welker for the first offensive series in the game.
"I'm not going to get into any details about it, but I don't think it's worth putting Coach in that situation," Welker said. "So in a sense I do regret it. ... As much as you might want to get enticed into that stuff, at the end of the day, it's just not worth it."
"It's not always easy to keep a lid on it, but at the same time, there's a greater goal, and that's winning the game and playing good football," Welker said. "That's what matters. All that other stuff doesn't matter at the end of the day."
