Periodically on the AFC East blog, I've been sharing updates from Ray Lucas' drug rehabilitation. The former New York Jets and Miami Dolphins quarterback has been candidly chronicling his difficult journey on Facebook.

Lucas reached an admirable milestone Monday in trying to cope with his addiction to painkillers.
"30 DAYS DRUG FREE TODAY! This is such a big thing for me. I will be getting my 30 day chip at tonight's meeting. Looking back at my life before P.A.S.T thinking that I would have died if not for P.A.S.T. and having Randy Grimes who was and is here to lean on and help get me into treatment and work with me through the entire process. Had an amazing experience this weekend will share with you all later."

PAST is Pain Alternatives, Solutions and Treatments, a New Jersey medical group that specializes in assisting retired athletes. PAST performed neck surgery on Lucas in September and helped him check into a rehab facility in West Palm Beach, Fla., last month.

Grimes, the former Tampa Bay Buccaneers center, is a recovering painkiller addict who has been mentoring Lucas.

Last week, Lucas posted a Facebook update in which he "Admitted that I am powerless over my addiction & that my life had become unmanageable. It was hard to bare my soul. It was an emotional experience. Tough to admit you are not in control of it. As an athlete I am competitive & use to being in control. First step ... a big one."
