ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. -- The Buffalo Bills are 3-0 and atop the AFC East.

As Chris Kelsay told me after Sunday's victory over the Oakland Raiders, those words coming out of his mouth felt "a little different. I've never been able to say that before. That's a new thing, but it feels good."

The last time the Bills led the AFC East was in Week 2 of 2003. Only seven players on the roster were on the team then: Ryan Denney, Rian Lindell, Brian Moorman, Josh Reed, Aaron Schobel, Kelsay and Terrence McGee.

Nobody was around the last time the Bills were in sole possession of first place Week 3 or later.

That was Week 13 of 1996.

The Bills were 9-3. The New England Patriots were 8-4. The Miami Dolphins and Indianapolis Colts were 6-6. The New York Jets were 1-11.

"You'd certainly rather be 3-0 than 0-3," Bills coach Dick Jauron said. "It is really early, though. We've just got to keep playing. I think the significance is we've won three games at the start of the season. That's a big plus.

"We've talked about it before: The fast start is good. But we've just got to play through the whole thing. It is a long year."
