Good news, but Pennington's career still in doubt

The biggest hurdle for Chad Pennington's return to the field probably won't be his shoulder, after all.

ESPN's Chris Mortensen reports the surgery performed Friday by Dr. James Andrews on Pennington's throwing shoulder went well and that no rips were detected in the rotator cuff.

The Miami Dolphins quarterback has undergone rotator cuff surgery twice. A third surgery was viewed as a potential career-ender.

Still, a comeback won't be easy. Pennington's contract with Miami is up at the end of this season. He will turn 34 before training camp opens next summer.

What team will take a chance on a graying quarterback who has a history of arm trouble and is coming off such a recent injury? Pennington has been written off before, but his best bet, it would seem, would be as a backup who can tutor a youngster.
