One of the biggest free-falling players in this week’s blogger mock draft was Alabama linebacker Courtney Upshaw. Once considered a top-15 prospect, Upshaw wasn’t taken until the No. 29 overall pick by the Baltimore Ravens.
Earlier in the draft, I made an un-Patriot type of move by trading up to get Upshaw’s former Alabama teammate Mark Barron. I watched New England’s horrendous pass defense all last season and did something significant to fix it by getting the best safety in the draft.
But the safe money is on New England not trading up. If Upshaw falls to the Patriots at No. 27, he would be steal. Upshaw has been strong against the run and a solid pass-rusher. He also was a productive player for the best defense in college football last season.
Circumstances, trades, etc. contributed to Upshaw’s free-fall in our blogger mock draft. I don’t see Upshaw falling to No. 29 on Thursday night. But if that’s the case, New England would be wise not to pass up such a tremendous value.
