MIAMI -- The New England Patriots are notorious for trading down in the draft. But this was a different year for the reigning AFC champs.
New England traded up with the Cincinnati Bengals at No. 21 to draft former Syracuse pass-rusher Chandler Jones. He was one of the fastest-risers up the draft board. Jones also is the younger brother of MMA star Jon Jones and Baltimore Ravens defensive linemen Arthur Jones.
The Patriots gave up a third-round pick (No. 93 overall) to move up six spots. New England and Cincinnati have history together making trades. The Patriots acquired former Bengals stars Corey Dillon and Chad Ochocinco.
Jones is a raw talent but has the physical ability to improve New England’s pass-rush. The Patriots were ranked 31st in total defense last season and 31st against the pass.
