As we mentioned earlier Friday, the New York Jets are under the microscope. And, right or wrong, perhaps no player is in the spotlight more Jets backup quarterback Tim Tebow.
The Jets acquired Tebow for his athleticism, work ethic and strong character. But they also got the media circus that comes with the popular quarterback, who is among the NFL leaders in jersey sales.
Tebow already is one his second team in three years, and New York is a lot different than Denver in many ways.
"I mean I don’t know. I’m still getting used to this market," Tebow said this week at organized team activities. "I think being a quarterback, you just have to be who you are wherever you are. I think that’s the best way to handle it and that’s how I’ve tried to handle it is just to be myself. Obviously this market’s a little bit different than most. There’s probably a little bit more scrutiny and a few more eyes watching you here in this market. But I think the way to handle that is just to be yourself, don’t let that change you, don’t let other people change you, just go have fun and enjoy what you do."
Many are keeping tabs on Tebow’s development and rapport with starting quarterback Mark Sanchez. Some expect Tebow to take Sanchez’s job at some point this season, which makes for an odd friendship.
But Sanchez appears to be handling the added pressure well. He’s taken Tebow in as a teammate and recently invited Tebow to his "Jets West" passing camp. Both are working with the goal in mind of helping the Jets win games in 2012.
"I think we just have a great relationship and I think we both want to get better as football players, as quarterbacks and find a way to help this team win football games and that is what it’s about," Tebow said. "Also, our friendship outside of this locker room, outside of this facility has been great and I think that is important as well."
