Johnson should focus on life, not football

Former Miami Dolphins receiver Chad Johnson's world is falling apart. Yet Johnson is still seeking another NFL opportunity.

The latest development is that Johnson's wife of 41 days, Evelyn Lozada, is filing for divorce. That caused the wide receiver to make his first public statement since being jailed for alleged domestic abuse over the weekend.

"I would like to apologize to everyone for the recent events that have occurred," Johnson said in a statement, according to The Associated Press. "I would like to wish Evelyn well and will never say anything bad about her because I truly love her to death. I will continue to be positive and train hard for another opportunity in the NFL. To all the fans and supporters I have disappointed, you have my sincerest apologies. I will stay positive and get through this tough period in my life."

At this point, Johnson needs to focus on life issues, not football. He lost his wife and his job in a matter of 72 hours. That's a tough combination for anyone to handle.

The fact that Johnson mentioned training hard in hopes of latching on with another NFL team is a bit concerning. When does he take personal time to heal? When does he reflect on all that went wrong so fast? Isn't it best to be away from the NFL spotlight and media for a while?

Perhaps the league will do Johnson a favor and not sign him immediately. His pending legal issues could scare off teams in the short term while Johnson straightens out his personal life. Johnson might not feel he needs this time away, but he does.

The NFL will be there for Johnson. Terrell Owens had about a half-dozen chances and is four years older. Johnson will get another opportunity.

But Johnson should enter that next opportunity with a clear head and a clear conscience. That won't happen until these legal and personal issues are behind him.
