ESPN.com Insider KC Joyner provided an all-encompassing piece Wednesday on the free-agent pairing of safety Ed Reed and the New England Patriots. This is a move that has been speculated for weeks, but Joyner argues that Reed “has the type of skill set that could have a championship domino effect on the entire New England ballclub.”
That brings us to our next poll question: Should the Patriots sign Reed in free agency? The future Hall of Famer is the top safety available and won't come cheap.
New England's pass defense struggled most of last season. The Patriots were 29th in pass defense and led the NFL by allowing 74 receptions of 20 yards or more. Reed is the best center-field safety in NFL history and will strike fear in opponents to attack New England deep.
But the Patriots also have other free-agent needs. In-house players like receiver Wes Welker, right tackle Sebastian Vollmer and cornerback Aqib Talib are all looking for sizable extensions. Signing Reed would decrease the Patriots’ chances of re-signing their own free agents.
Is Reed the missing link to a New England Super Bowl run? Using our SportsNation poll, vote on Reed potentially joining the Patriots. You can also share your thoughts in the comment section below.
