According to ESPN’s Chris Mortensen, the Bills are one of many teams interested in the veteran quarterback. Mortensen also mentions the Chicago Bears, Cleveland Browns, Arizona Cardinals, San Francisco 49ers, New York Giants, Indianapolis Colts, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and New Orleans Saints. So the competition is steep.
I sought out opinions from Bills fans Monday evening via Twitter, and the reponses were mixed:
@BenCulmer tweets: “I like the idea of Hasselbeck, a rookie and Tjax [Tarvaris Jackson] fighting it out in camp. A good stop gap until next draft too."
@HarrisonTyra tweets: “Fitzpatrick 2.0."
@Dan_Banach tweets: “Bring him in at the right price. Stop gap until we get our future qb and give him time to learn.”
@HotKarl8 tweets: “Sigh…Geno Smith please.”
@WikiBeania tweets: “I'll take it. Good veteran to compete/mentor with a rookie we can draft.”
The Bills haven't done much in free agency other than signing linebacker Manny Lawson. So simply having reported interest in a veteran upgrade is offseason progress.
But the competition will be plentiful for Hasselbeck. The Bills have a shot if Hasselbeck is still looking for a chance to start in 2013. But Buffalo will not get a look if Hasselbeck's priority is to join a Super Bowl contender.
