One day after ripping rookie Geno Smith for a "brutal" practice, New York Jets coach Rex Ryan made the anticipated decision Thursday, naming Mark Sanchez the starter Saturday night against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
The only surprise is that it came one day earlier than expected.
Ryan will be available to the media at 3 p.m. ET to discuss the move. The big question is how this impacts the overall competition. Sanchez also started the preseason opener, giving him the advantage. But the Jets still want to give Smith a chance, so Ryan is expected to extend the competition through the third game.
Smith suffered a mild ankle sprain in the opener and, although he hasn't missed any practice time, it has affected his performance, according to Ryan. The coach said Wednesday Smith is "not close to 100 percent," creating the real possibility he may not play at all against the Jaguars.
