Fins, Jets fans must root for Packers

12/7/2009

Miami Dolphins and New York Jets fans should be pulling for the Green Bay Packers like they're rooting for their own.

The Dolphins' and Jets' wild-card playoff hopes would benefit greatly with a Baltimore Ravens loss Monday night at Lambeau Field.

If the Ravens lose, they would be tied with the Dolphins and Jets at 6-6, one game out of a wild-card spot with four games to play.

Below are the AFC standings heading into Monday night. They are listed by overall record (with division and conference records). The No. 1 tiebreaker in the divisional and conference standings is head-to-head results, if applicable. After that, ties are broken within the division by division record and for the wild card by conference record.

As mentioned before on this blog, don't just look at the records and how many games back a team is. Just as significant is the number of teams it must leapfrog to get into sixth place.

1. Indianapolis Colts 12-0 (5-0, 8-0)

2. Cincinnati Bengals 9-3 (6-0, 6-3)

3. San Diego Chargers 9-3 (5-1, 7-3)

4. New England Patriots 7-5 (3-2, 5-4)

5. Denver Broncos 8-4 (3-1, 6-3)

6. Jacksonville Jaguars 7-5 (3-2, 6-2)

7. Baltimore Ravens 6-5 (3-2, 6-4)

8. Miami Dolphins 6-6 (4-2, 4-4)

9. New York Jets 6-6 (2-4, 5-5)

10. Pittsburgh Steelers 6-6 (1-3, 4-5)

11. Tennessee Titans 5-7 (2-4, 3-7)

12. Houston Texans 5-7 (1-5, 4-6)
