Injuries might open door for Brohm

Five days ago, Buffalo Bills interim coach Perry Fewell indicated it wouldn't do anybody a shred of good to insert third-string quarterback Brian Brohm into a game this year.

Brohm has worked with only the scout team. Fewell contended that putting him on the field would be counterproductive. Brohm wouldn't be prepared and, therefore, his performance wouldn't suggest anything for the future.

"To put him in that position might be a recipe for failure for him," Fewell said Wednesday. "It might not give him the best opportunity. It might not show us what he really can do."

Brohm might play anyway.

Bills quarterbacks Ryan Fitzpatrick and Trent Edwards suffered ankle injuries in Sunday's loss to the New England Patriots. Edwards hobbled off the field four snaps after he went in for an ineffective Fitzpatrick in the fourth quarter. Fitzpatrick then came up gimpy but finished the game.

Fewell declined to speculate whether Fitzpatrick or Edwards would be available for Sunday's game at the Atlanta Falcons.

"We'll determine that on Wednesday," Fewell said. "We'll have to see where these other guys are. We'll obviously have a plan and look at them on Tuesday and see how they're feeling and look at them Wednesday and see how they’re feeling and go from there."

Bills fans have been eager to catch a glimpse of Brohm because the quarterback situation looks so bleak for the future. The Bills signed the 2008 second-round draft choice off the Green Bay Packers' practice squad a month ago.
