Jets can't afford to wait for Darrelle Revis

Darrelle Revis? Who's that?

The New York Jets still have to field 11 defenders for practice and are acting like their star cornerback won't play a down for them in 2010.

Antonio Cromartie is in Revis' usual slot on the left side. Rookie nickel back Kyle Wilson and top backup Dwight Lowery are sharing reps on the right side.

And they're hoping to be surprised.

"We're going to prepare like he's not going to be here," Jets coach Rex Ryan said Monday morning. "If he comes through the door, that's fine. Somebody will kiss him on the lips probably. But the guys that are here, those are the guys we're getting ready for the season."

ESPNNewYork.com's Rich Cimini reports Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum met with Revis' agents Friday away from the "Hard Knocks" cameras that are all over the team's training camp at SUNY Cortland.

Cimini writes agents Neil Schwartz and Jonathan Feinsod presented the Jets with an offer at a diner in Roscoe, N.Y., but the Jets haven't responded yet.

Revis needs to report by Tuesday (30 days before the start of the regular season) or he won't get credit for a season of NFL experience, which is used to determine free-agency status.
