Dolphins doing worse with more idle time
The Miami Dolphins' results at home and away couldn't be more divergent.
The difference has been night and day.
Home versus road. Prime time versus afternoon.
One or the other, they're one in the same.
Wins and losses have broken rather distinctly for the Dolphins. They opened the season 2-0 with victories in Ralph Wilson Stadium and the Metrodome. The Dolphins then dropped two in a row under the Sun Life Stadium lights.
Maybe it's beneficial their next game will be against the Green Bay Packers on Sunday afternoon at Lambeu Field.
Is it possible the Dolphins have too many distractions in South Florida when they can sleep in Saturday and Sunday or Sunday and Monday?
"I love playing in front of our home fans, but when you play home -- and this is not an excuse; this is just fact -- there's a lot more time for the players, a lot more free time for the players," Dolphins head coach Tony Sparano said at his Wednesday news conference. "I think when you take them on the road, it's kind of this us-against-the-world mentality when you're out there in some of the places that you're playing, and you have your team's total attention for the entire time that you're out there.
"Now, to them that might not be always a good thing that they're around the coach all the time, but to me, it gives us an opportunity to drive that point home one more time maybe, where at home you're banking on the rest factor, [on the road] you know you got more time and they're getting more rest.
"That would be the only thing I can honestly say. I mean other than that, anything else would be a real excuse, and I'm not into making excuses. So we need to play better at home and give our fans what they deserve."
The Dolphins lost to the New York Jets on Sunday night in Week 3 and the New England Patriots on Monday night in Week 4.
The Dolphins are averaging 4.5 more points at home/night than away/day.
But they're also surrendering 26.0 more points and are a minus-5 in turnover margin at home/night.
