Santonio Holmes is minding his business

For this week's "Hot Read," ESPN.com senior writer Elizabeth Merrill explored the transition receiver Santonio Holmes is trying to make with the New York Jets.

The reason the Jets were able to acquire Holmes was because the Pittsburgh Steelers grew tired of dealing with his off-the-field transgressions. Merrill was at the Jets' facility in Florham Park, N.J., this week. She found Holmes to be reserved about his personal evolution. But those closest to him, including his mother, friends and teammates, have noticed a changed man.

Holmes' mentor and speed coach, Tom Shaw, told Merrill of a recent discussion they had about Holmes' sons. Holmes said he was worried about what his sons would read about him when they Google his name to find links about marijuana and domestic violence and a barroom assault charge.

"He understands that the first 15 pages need to be about Santonio Holmes scoring touchdowns," Shaw said. "Doing good things for kids.

"He's got to end up proving it. He's doing everything right now. And I'm proud of him. I really am."

In this video, ESPN analyst Matt Hasselbeck broke down exactly how Holmes has made an impact on the Jets' offense, helping them gain 74 more passing yards per game compared to when he was out of the lineup.
