Ike Taylor will 'lay out' Santonio Holmes

By Tim Graham

When Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Ike Taylor began to speak about former teammate Santonio Holmes, it sure sounded like another quote in an ongoing, adorable dialogue with the New York Jets.

"I love him, and that's my boy," Taylor said of Holmes, now a Jets receiver.

That wasn't all Taylor said, though. He continued.

"But when we get between those white lines, it's a whole different deal," Taylor told New York Post reporter Bart Hubbuch. "I'm going to try to be as disrespectful as possible once we get between those white lines. Friendship doesn't enter into it then."

Taylor also did a nice impersonation of Jets linebacker Bart Scott, who last week added to a wild week of trash talking with the New England Patriots by saying receiver Wes Welker's "days in a uniform will be numbered."

"I'm not going to hesitate to lay him out," Taylor said. "No question at all. You know why? Because he ain't going to hesitate to crack on me if he gets a chance."

The Steelers and Jets will need to intensify the banter to approach last week's talk -- some blunt (Antonio Cromartie calling Tom Brady an "ass----"), some clever (Welker with 11 foot-related references) -- between the Jets and Patriots.

But it's good to see some sort of indication that before each snap Sunday at Heinz Field, the center won't ask the defensive line for permission to hike the ball, and the linebackers won't apologize for making contact.
