Poll Friday: How much for Wes Welker?
By James Walker
This week we gave Buffalo Bills’ leading receiver Steve Johnson the poll treatment. In our latest edition of “Poll Friday” in the AFC East, we will do the same to New England Patriots No. 1 receiver Wes Welker.
Here’s the question: How much should the Patriots pay Welker, an unrestricted free agent, in annual salary?
Welker, 30, led the NFL with 122 receptions for 1,569 yards. Should he be paid like an elite receiver in the range of $8-9 million per year? He’s not your prototype, such as Calvin Johnson or Andre Johnson. But Welker can put his numbers up against anyone.
What about $5-7 million per year? That would be a raise compared to the $3.62 annual salary Welker averaged on his prior contract. Is that enough?
The Patriots can also use the franchise tag to continue negotiations and/or keep Welker for at least one more season.
Using our SportsNation poll, vote on how much New England should pay Welker annually. You can also share your thoughts in the comment section below.
