Report: TE Hernandez had shoulder surgery
By James Walker
The injury woes of Pro Bowl tight end Rob Gronkowski (arm) received most of the attention for the New England Patriots this offseason. However, it turns out one of Gronkowski’s offensive teammates also is on the mend.
Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network reports that tight end Aaron Hernandez is recovering from offseason shoulder surgery and is expected to miss organized team activities and spring mini-camp. However, Hernandez is expected to be ready by training camp this summer.
The injury trend is nothing new for New England’s dynamic duo of tight ends. Gronkowski and Hernandez have suffered multiple injuries over the past two seasons and rarely played together in 2012. Gronkowski twice broke his left arm last season and had three surgeries. Hernandez had a severe ankle sprain last season and now this recent shoulder surgery.
Both tight ends will miss a lot of offseason work for the Patriots. But Gronkowski and Hernandez must get healthy and take a larger role on offense during the regular season after the loss of Pro Bowl receiver Wes Welker, who led the Patriots with 118 receptions last season.
