Jets go defense again with Richardson
By James Walker
Head coach Rex Ryan apparently still has influence in the New York Jets’ draft room. The Jets, under first-year general manager John Idzik, selected their second defensive player in the first round by taking Missouri defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson at No. 13 overall.
New York was reportedly looking to trade down to get additional picks. It took a while for the Jets to make this selection, which could be an indication that trade talks were ongoing but nothing materialized. Richardson joins Alabama cornerback Dee Milliner as New York’s two first-round picks.
Richardson is not a sexy pick, so the Jets left themselves open to criticism with this selection. My biggest complaint is New York ignored its offense with both first-round picks. I’m not sure how the Jets expect to do much on offensive next season with a questionable quarterback situation and no dynamic skill players.
But Ryan has always thrived on defense and is probably smiling with two new defensive additions.
