Recapping a whirlwind Sunday

By Mike Reiss

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- Had trouble keeping track of all the Patriots' happenings on Sunday? It's understandable. There was a lot going on.

Consider this a one-stop-shop that wraps it all up in a single place.

Who's in: C Chris Barker (Dolphins), C Braxston Cave (Browns), DT A.J. Francis (Dolphins), LB Chris White (Lions),

Who's out: CB Marquice Cole, RB Leon Washington

Quick-hit thoughts on moves: By claiming two interior offensive linemen and a defensive tackle on waivers, Bill Belichick made it clear where he saw the roster as lacking depth. It was rather obvious. As for Cole, it wouldn't be a surprise if he returns at some point; the Patriots are thin at cornerback. Washington seemed to be a victim of a numbers game; the Patriots just had too many backs after acquiring LeGarrette Blount in a draft-day trade. Yet I still wonder if the team will regret letting him go. The feeling here is that his veteran presence/professionalism in that running back room would have been important for a young group. On kickoff returns, Blount and rookie receiver Josh Boyce now look like top candidates to fill the role.

Wanted them, but didn't get them: The Patriots put in waiver claims on rookie cornerback Marcus Cooper (49ers) and rookie defensive tackle Chris Jones (Texans), but other teams with higher priority in the waiver order were awarded them.

Practice squad taking shape: The following five players were announced by the team as practice squad signings: LB Ja'Gared Davis, S Kanorris Davis, CB Justin Green, DL Marcus Forston and LB Jeff Tarpinian. Also, WR Quentin Sims agreed to join the practice squad, according to a source. That leaves the team with two spots to fill, and it will be interesting to see if a quarterback is targeted for one of them. The Patriots entered the day as one of 14 teams in the NFL with just two quarterbacks on their active roster, so addressing a third layer at the position is good business.

Gronk at practice in full pads: Doesn't get much more significant than that (news story and analysis).

Svitek with brace on right knee: Veteran reserve offensive tackle/guard Will Svitek, who wasn't spotted at practice today, wore a black brace over his right knee. He also wore a sleeve over his right leg. First injury report of the week is due out Wednesday.

Locker room feel: With the roster trimmed down, there were obviously many fewer players in the locker room during the time that reporters were present. Undrafted rookie defensive tackle Joe Vellano and undrafted rookie punter Ryan Allen were among those drawing big media crowds, which reflected their beat-the-odds stories to earn a spot. Also, tight end Michael Hoomanawanui was swarmed by reporters, many of whom asked about Gronkowski's presence on the practice field.

Updating rosters. A few jersey number changes for players -- LB Steve Beauharnais is now No. 58, while Vellano is No. 72.

Looking ahead. The Patriots, with a roster now set at 53 players, are back on the practice field Monday morning. Belichick holds a news conference at 12:15 p.m. ET.
