Jets report: Kerley medically cleared

By Matt Ehalt

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- Jets wide receiver Jeremy Kerley (concussion) returned to practice Wednesday after being cleared by the team's medical staff. He had a full practice.

Kerley
"He's been cleared medically and that's why he was out there fully today," Jets coach Rex Ryan said.

Kerley suffered a hit to the head in the Jets' win over Tampa Bay on Sept. 8 and returned to the game. He was hit by three Buccaneers on that play, and safety Mark Barron was flagged for unnecessary roughness on the hit. Kerley played 39 snaps and caught three balls for 45 yards in the victory.

A Jets spokesman said last week Kerley passed an in-game test following the hit and later passed a postgame test. Kerley showed concussion-like symptoms the Monday after the game and was diagnosed with a concussion. He missed Thursday's loss to the Patriots and wore a red noncontact jersey at practice Monday.

If Kerley can play this weekend against Buffalo, it's a boost for the Jets' offense as well as their special teams. Kerley is the team's top slot receiver and its punt returner. The Jets didn't have a punt returner back for three New England punts in their 13-10 loss on Thursday night. Kerley averaged 10.95 yards per punt return last year and returned one for a touchdown.

Linebacker Quinton Coples had a limited practice Wednesday, the first time he's been listed on the injury report as a participant in practice since suffering a hairline fracture in his right ankle. Running back Bilal Powell missed practice with an illness.
