Jairus Byrd progressing, says Marrone

By Mike Rodak

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. -- Buffalo Bills safety Jairus Byrd began the team's third week of practice with the same injury report designation as he's had -- limited with a foot injury -- but Bills head coach Doug Marrone said Wednesday that he is nearing a return.

"I think every day there's progress," Marrone said. "It's just a matter of time now until when it gets to that point where he's going to be able to go out there. I think we're getting closer and closer."

Byrd was listed as doubtful before each of the last two games and was later inactive for each.

It has been tough to gauge Byrd's workload during the period of practice available to reporters. After stretching, when players break into positional groups, defensive backs coach Donnie Henderson leads his players through a light-intensity walk-through. On Wednesday, Byrd acted as the scout team running back at one point in that period.

Otherwise, it has been unclear how much Byrd, who has plantar fasciitis, is participating in practices.

Marrone will announce Byrd's status for Sunday's game following practice Friday.
