Drive of the game: Geno's quick start
By Ohm Youngmisuk
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Rookie Geno Smith probably could not have gotten off to a better start on Sunday against the Bills.
That's why the drive of the game is the Jets' opening drive when Smith calmly led the Jets to a 12-play, 80-yard scoring drive, capped by an 8-yard touchdown run by Smith.
The drive actually started with Chris Ivory losing 2 yards on a run. But he gained 5 yards on the next play. On third-and-7 at the Jets' 23, Smith completed a 45-yard pass to Stephen Hill along the right side. Hill was wide open and had to wait for the pass before being chased out of bounds. If Smith had thrown a better pass leading Hill, the Jets might've had a touchdown.
With the ball at the Bills' 32, Smith threw a short pass to Bilal Powell for a gain of 5. Holding against the Jets pushed the ball back to the Bills' 40. Smith threw an incomplete pass on a first-and-18. Ivory ran for a yard before Smith converted on third down again by hitting Jeremy Kerley for 18 yards.
Powell rushed for another 7 yards on the next two plays to set up a third-and-3 at the Bills' 14. Smith gained another first down by gunning a pass to Kerley for 7 yards.
With first-and-goal at the 7, Powell took a direct snap for 4 yards. Vladimir Ducasse was flagged for a false start on second-and-goal at the 3 but that didn't slow Smith down. Smith ran in for an 8-yard score on a quarterback draw to push the Jets up 7-0 with 9:06 to go in the first.
