Patriots release TE Beck, LS Hughlett
By Mike Reiss
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- Rookie tight end Tyler Beck of Bowling Green and first-year long snapper Charley Hughlett were released Thursday by the New England Patriots.
Both were long shots to make the final roster, with the timing of Beck's release somewhat unusual, as he signed with the club on Monday. Beck's contract included a $1,500 signing bonus.
“I’m more of a tight end/fullback. I think I can do a little bit of everything, but I think I’m definitely more so in the blocking game. But I can still compete in the passing game and be a versatile player for us," Beck said Tuesday.
With the release of Beck, the Patriots now have Rob Gronkowski, Michael Hoomanawanui, D.J. Williams and undrafted rookies Justin Jones and Asa Watson on the depth chart. Veteran tight end Dustin Keller previously visited with the Patriots, and he could still be under consideration.
As for the long snapper spot, Hughlett was competing with incumbent Danny Aiken. That competition will now come in the form of Harvard's Tyler Ott, whose signing with the team should become official once he's concluded with his final exams this week.
