Bills receivers coach staying put for now
A couple days ago we linked to a Buffalo News story that stated Buffalo Bills receivers coach Tyke Tolbert had been hired by Louisiana State for the same job at his alma mater.
Imagine my surprise Saturday morning, when I boarded the plane at Buffalo Niagara Airport, flipped open the paper and saw a headline Tolbert wasn't going anywhere.
Few details have been reported, and what's out there has been conflicting. Buffalo News reporter Rodney McKissic, citing an unnamed source, wrote Tolbert never was offered the gig despite it being widely reported. NewOrleans.com claimed the reason Tolbert didn't take the job was "due to financial reasons." The Monroe News Star reported talks between LSU and Tolbert broke down, but that story has since been pulled from the paper's site.
If Tolbert did pass on LSU for financial reasons, it's a risky move. Unless the Bills already have privately decided interim coach Perry Fewell will be their man, they're on the verge of opening up a coaching search. There would be no guarantees for Tolbert -- or any other current assistant -- he'll be retained.
