Patriots will draft 22nd, Jets still TBD
The New England Patriots getting ousted from the playoffs means they at least know where they'll pick in the 2010 draft.
New rules were adopted this year for setting the draft order, with playoff teams being slotted based on the rounds they're eliminated. The Patriots, knocked out Sunday by the Baltimore Ravens, will draft 22nd.
The New York Jets still are alive. The best draft slot they can hope for is 25th, but I'm sure they'd be thrilled to do worse than that.
In the past, the first 30 picks (Super Bowl teams drafted 31st and 32nd) were based strictly on regular-season records. For example, the San Diego Chargers won the AFC West last year but owned the 16th pick, while the Patriots didn't go to the postseason and received the 23rd.
