Fins S Bell makes watered-down Pro Bowl
(To be read with the same incredulous tone as Tom Brady when told Plaxico Burress predicted the New England Patriots would score only 17 points in Super Bowl XLII.)
David Garrard is going to the Pro Bowl? Heh, heh, heh. OK ...
The NFL named 14 roster substitutes to the Pro Bowl because this year's exhibition takes place a week before the Super Bowl instead of after. All of the Indianapolis Colts and New Orleans Saints who'd been selected for the Pro Bowl needed to be replaced.
Among the alternates was Miami Dolphins safety Yeremiah Bell, the team's lone representative in its home stadium because tackle Jake Long pulled out. Bell will go instead of Colts safety Antoine Bethea, who was an injury replacement for Troy Polamalu.
Bell was the AFC's third safety alternate. New England Patriots safety Brandon Meriweather was a previous alternate, making the Pro Bowl as an injury replacement for Buffalo Bills rookie Jairus Byrd.
Bell had a far better season than the rest of the Dolphins' secondary. The Dolphins pass defense routinely gave up big plays and ranked 24th in pass defense.
But he might have been Miami's defensive MVP. He made a team-high 113 tackles. He recorded three interceptions and 1.5 sacks.
