McShay: Draft could turn on Buffalo's pick

April, 7, 2010
ESPN draft analyst Todd McShay believes the Buffalo Bills own the pivotal pick in the upcoming draft.

The Bills hold the ninth selection, and that's where McShay predicts Notre Dame quarterback Jimmy Clausen will be in the spotlight.

McShay forecasts the Washington Redskins will begin a run of offensive tackles with Oklahoma State's Russell Okung at No. 4. The Bills happen to need one of those. But four of the tackles (Okung, Iowa's Bryan Bulaga, Rutgers' Anthony Davis and Maryland's Bruce Campbell) might already be off the board by the time the Bills are put on the clock.

Will there be a tackle worth taking over Clausen?

"Here's where it gets interesting: No. 9. This is the spot," McShay says. "If you're in the Clausen camp, you have to hope that these four offensive tackles come off the board.

"I think the Bills should go with an offensive tackle, but if all four are off the board, then I think Jimmy Clausen finally comes off the board at No. 9. That seems to be the spot. If not, it could be a long fall for him."

McShay then explains Clausen could plummet because teams in the bottom half of the draft have much greater needs than quarterback, creating a situation similar to the one former Notre Dame quarterback Brady Quinn experienced in 2007.

Kiper's Big Board is a loaded draft menu

January, 7, 2010
ESPN draft tycoon Mel Kiper has revealed the latest edition of his Big Board.

The New England Patriots and New York Jets won't be slotted until their seasons have concluded, but we do know the Buffalo Bills own the ninth spot and the Miami Dolphins are 12th.

With that in mind, we can take a look at Kiper's rankings (you do need to be an ESPN Insider to see the whole thing) and cogitate.

Kiper's Big Board is his ranking of the top players, not a mock of how the players will be selected.

What does he offer in the way of tackles for the Bills? He rates Russell Okung from Oklahoma State seventh, one of two tackles listed on the Big Board and the only one in the top 17.

If the Bills want a top quarterback, then Kiper seems to think one will have to plummet. Notre Dame's Jimmy Clausen is rated fourth, and Oklahoma's Sam Bradford is fifth.

The Dolphins could do worse than snagging Oklahoma State receiver Dez Bryant, who Kiper rates ninth, or Alabama inside linebacker Rolando McClain, who's 10th.
