Since I was away for a few days, the AFC North mailbag is filling to capacity. I will try to get to more of these questions and comments now and throughout the week.
Tim from in the Mil: Hey James...awesome blog!! Why haven't the Steelers made any real moves in free agency?? It's not like we couldn't use a lineman or 5. With such big problems on that line (no real run game or pass protection), it just kinda shocks me that they would consider the draft the only option.
James Walker: Thanks, Tim. I'm shocked by the amount of Pittsburgh fans who are surprised/disappointed/disgruntled their team hasn't attacked free agency. The Steelers are staying true to their identity. This is what they do. Last year Pittsburgh had under-the-radar signings like tailback Mewelde Moore and center Justin Hartwig. They worked out fine. Expect the Steelers to take a similar approach to free agency this year.
Bobby from Cleveland writes: James, I was wondering what you think the browns could get for Brady. Reports were that they werent sold on him being a QB of the future, so could they get a low 1st for him or is he about the same value as DA at this point?
James Walker: Bobby, to my knowledge the Browns are not set on trading Quinn. The new regime in Cleveland is simply keeping all options open. As far as value, I think the Matt Cassel trade changed the market a little bit, making a second-rounder (possibly with another pick) the best the Browns could get for Quinn. Anderson's value is probably a little lower than Quinn's, but really it depends on the team(s) interested. It only takes one GM to fall in love with either player.
Fionn from Wilmington writes: Yea I know you're thinking, not him again but it is. I saw that the Broncos may be shopping Tony Scheffler around. What do you think the odds are the Ravens trade for him? People are saying that we need another/different tight end and he can block and still be a downfield threat. I wouldn't mind having a big, athletic tight end like him.
James Walker: Not at all, Fionn (Wilmington stand up!). You're cool with me. Look for Baltimore to address the tight end situation in the draft, not free agency. It is possible they do so in the first round if Brandon Pettigrew happens to fall to No. 26.
Dre Bailey writes: j walk what ever happened to steelers rb duce staley?
James Walker: Believe it or not, Dre, Staley is in my line of work as part of the media. He has a sports talk radio show in his home state of South Carolina and is a sideline reporter in the fall for the University of South Carolina Gamecocks football program, which is his alma mater.
JB from Cleveland writes: James, keep up the great work. I am a 25 yr Browns dawgpound season ticket holder. Most season ticket holders I talk with are not renewing their tickets out of frustration with Browns undertaking yet another rebuilding effort. My question is, what do you think the chances are that Mangenious can repeat his first year success in NY and pull of something similar to Miami/Atlanta did last year? The feeling in Cleveland is that we are going to have to endure another double digit loss season as apathy grows within the Brown's once rabid fan base.
James Walker: I live in Cleveland, too, JB. So I see the frustrations of Browns fans daily. Yes, Cleveland is rebuilding next season. I wouldn't be surprised if the team trades more in-house talent for draft picks. But the Browns have a relatively easy schedule compared to last year and I expect the team to be more disciplined. That combination should produce more than four wins next year but not enough to realistically compete for the AFC North title.
