Receivers are making a lot of news in the division lately. So we're going to keep our latest AFC North mailbag focused strictly on that position.
As always, send your questions and comments to our division inbox.
Jim from Cincy writes: James, now that the Giants need a down-field receiver do you think they may have interest in Ocho. Even though he had a down year last year a lot could be due to backup QB. Also enjoy your perspective on the AFC North.
James Walker: Thanks, Jim. Personally, I have not heard of any direct interest to date between Chad Ocho Cinco and the New York Giants. Ocho Cinco has been mostly silent this offseason, and I'm not even convinced the Bengals are willing to deal him. Cleveland Browns receiver Braylon Edwards is a stronger candidate for New York. He's younger and the Browns are more apt to trade Edwards for the right price.
Jesse from Boulder, CO writes: James, why are the Browns even considering trading Braylon Edwards? Wouldn't dealing him now be the epitome of "selling low"?
James Walker: That is the catch, Jesse. The Browns won't "sell low” for Edwards, and that is why he remains in Cleveland to this day. There is certainly a market for Edwards, starting with the New York Giants. But despite coming off a bad year, the Browns want a lot for him or they are willing to keep Edwards in the final year of his contract. I doubt anything happens with Edwards unless a first-round pick is involved, perhaps coupled with a third-round pick and/or a good player in return.
Michael from East Moriches, NY writes: What percentage do you think Edwards will be heading to NYG? How about the percentage of Boldin or Chad going to NYG?
James Walker: Here we go with the percentage game again. I'm not sure why, but readers love this stuff. I would say there is a 55-percent chance for Edwards to land in New York and a 15-percent chance for Chad Ocho Cinco. Those trade percentages would be higher if you opened up possibilities to the other 30 teams. I don't cover the Arizona Cardinals, so I will pass on that. ESPN.com's Mike Sando of the NFC West blog would be able to provide a better read on the Anquan Boldin situation.
Daniel from Sterling, VA writes: With there being constant rumors about the Browns possibly trading Braylon Edwards for a first round pick, is their any chance Baltimore could be a destination? I know inter division trades are rare, but that would seem to be a perfect fit for Baltimore since they are looking for WR in the draft anyway.
James Walker: Don't count on it, Daniel. There is absolutely no reason for the Browns to help the Ravens beat them twice a year. The last time Cleveland and Baltimore did business, the Browns swapped first-round picks with the Ravens in 2006 so Baltimore could select defensive tackle Haloti Ngata. How's that working out for Cleveland?
Chang from Baltimore writes: James, do you believe Heyward-Bey will fall to as far as 26th pick(Ravens)after Heyward-Bey had a eye popping combine. And do you think the Ravens like Kenny Britt?
James Walker: Chang, the secret is out on Darrius Heyward-Bey and it looks like he could be gone within the first 25 picks. Baltimore is not as high on Britt as they are on Heyward-Bey. So if Britt is the best available receiver, I think the Ravens would probably look at another position in the first round.
David from Charlotte writes: With the Cleveland Browns wide receiving core looking dismal without Stallworth and Jurevicius, not to mention Braylon Edwards possibly traded, what do you expect out of Paul Hubbard next season?
James Walker: David, I wasn't overwhelmed with what I saw from Hubbard last year. But I seem to be in the minority of those who didn't expect much from him in his first season. Because the Browns didn't have a first-, second- or third-round pick last year, Hubbard seemed to carried the stigma of a first-day pick at times when he was only a sixth-round selection. To me, Hubbard looked like a sixth rounder trying to find his way in the NFL. He would need to make a significant jump in his second year if he wants to fill the roles of Joe Jurevicius and possibly Donte Stallworth and/or Braylon Edwards.
