One of my favorite things to do during training camp is look through the new media guides so I can learn more about the players and coaches who I'm covering. There's always lots of interesting tidbits hidden deep between the statistics and pictures.

Here are some notes from the 2008 editions:

  • Did you know Cleveland Browns outside linebacker Antwan Peek was a tremendous high school basketball player and was recruited by Bob Huggins to play hoops at the University of Cincinnati?
  • Did you know Browns guard Seth McKinney's father, Mike, is the chancellor at Texas A&M?
  • Did you know former Cincinnati Bengals fullback Tyler Whaley has a book called the Tyler Whaley Story coming out in September? It's written by Ken Gordon of the Columbus Dispatch, who is a former colleague and an all-around great guy.
  • Did you know Bengals cornerback Deltha O'Neal was student body president during his senior year at Milpitas High School in California?
  • Did you know that Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin holds the school record at William and Mary for career touchdown receptions with 20?
  • Did you know, ladies, that Steelers backup quarterback Charlie Batch is single?
  • Did you know that Pittsburgh offensive coordinator Bruce Arians was head coach from 1983-88 at Temple University, my alma mater? Arians had winning records both in 1984 (6-5) and 1986 (6-5), which are amazing feats.
  • Did you know Steelers defensive lineman Nick Eason was the first athlete at Clemson to graduate in three years?
  • Did you know Baltimore teammate Brendon Ayanbadejo likes to rollerblade and body surf in his free time?
  • Did you know media guides could be this interesting?
