More details have emerged from the weekend arrest of Cincinnati Bengals running back Cedric Benson.

Television station KXAN in Texas reports, according to the police affidavit, that Benson allegedly punched a former roommate in the face about 5 a.m. Sunday morning repeatedly and caused "severe injury." It was previously reported by Your News Now in Austin, Texas, that the alleged victim was a family member.

Benson was charged with misdemeanor assault and released from Travis County jail at 2 p.m. This is his second assault allegation since 2010, and it couldn't have come at a worst time for the pending free agent, who was expected to get a sizable extension from the Bengals following back-to-back 1,000-yard rushing seasons.

Cincinnati needs to tread very carefully with this situation.

The legal system will eventually determine if Benson is innocent or guilty. But with free agency potentially starting in the next week or two, the Bengals do not have time to wait on a verdict. If Benson is found guilty, the NFL also would have to rule on a suspension.

At this point it's much safer for Cincinnati to invest big money elsewhere in free agency until Benson is able to put his legal woes behind him. Here are some other possibilities.
