Pro Bowl safety Ed Reed was absent from the first day of Ravens mandatory minicamp, according to the Baltimore Sun.
ReedThis doesn't come as a major surprise because Reed hinted he might not show up for the offseason workout. After Reed said he was "not 100 percent committed right now to playing this year" a month ago, Ravens coach John Harbaugh interpreted the remarks as Reed not being committed to the offseason workouts.
"He's got a lot of things going on and he's working on personal things," Harbaugh said last month. "I guarantee he's training. I guarantee he's preparing for the season. That's just Ed."
Harbaugh is expected to address Reed's no-show after the team's afternoon practice. If Reed wasn't excused from the mandatory minicamp by the team, he could be subject to a $70,000 fine for missing the three practices this week. This probably won't happen because this is the same team that allowed linebacker Terrell Suggs to keep his money despite getting hurt away from the facility.
Running back Ray Rice is also not present at the Ravens' minicamp. He can't be disciplined by the Ravens because he has yet to sign his franchise tag tender and technically isn't under contract.
I will update the Reed situation after Harbaugh speaks to Baltimore reporters.
