Postcard from Baltimore: Flacco's wife hit

OWINGS MILLS, Md. -- The Ravens' Justin Tucker made all 13 of his field-goal attempts in Saturday's practice. But it was hardly a perfect day.

One of Tucker's kicks accidentally hit a woman who was walking behind the goal post. The woman just happened to be Joe Flacco's wife, Dana.

Tucker went over to apologize, and Flacco's wife was not injured. Still, this wasn't the greatest moment for Tucker, who is trying to unseat Billy Cundiff.

Here are my observations on football-related matters:
  • This was a bad day for the entire Flacco family. Joe Flacco struggled in the first practice since the preseason opener. In a red-zone drill, he was intercepted by cornerback Lardarius Webb. In a drill where the offense was backed up to its own end zone, Flacco was picked off by safety Bernard Pollard, who is known more for his play against the run and not the pass. "You know the defense is going good when you don't hear the fans," linebacker Jameel McClain said on the sideline.
  • Someone who is flying under the radar is guard Justin Boren, an undrafted player from a year ago who has become a favorite with the coaching staff. Bobbie Williams remains the starter at left guard, but Boren is receiving some reps with the starters at that spot.
  • Left tackle Bryant McKinnie is still working with the second team. McKinnie went against Sergio Kindle several times and didn't allow the linebacker anywhere close to backup quarterback Tyrod Taylor.
  • Starting center Matt Birk remains out with back spasms as the Ravens allow him to take it easy for a second straight training camp. Backup Gino Gradkowski, who is undersized, struggled with his snaps in the shotgun. Flacco twice had to pick them up off the ground.
  • With Torrey Smith (sprained ankle) sidelined, Jacoby Jones stepped up and made a couple athletic catches. LaQuan Williams, though, had a rough day, dropping a couple of passes and juggling another before making the catch.
  • Cornerback Jimmy Smith (back) returned after missing four straight practices, and backup Bernard Pierce (hamstring) was back after sitting out seven straight. Tight end Ed Dickson, who sprained his shoulder on a touchdown catch in the opener, had his right arm in a sling.
