Reading between the lines, it appears another quarterback change is brewing in Cleveland.
Browns head coach Eric Mangini said in his Monday news conference he will wait until Wednesday to name Brady Quinn or Derek Anderson the starter for next Monday’s game against the Baltimore Ravens (4-4). Quinn
Mangini said he hasn’t spoken to the two quarterbacks about the situation. But why would he need to if things were status quo with Anderson as the starter?
In previous weeks, Mangini remained firm that Anderson was still Cleveland's starting quarterback. This week he's coy. These are all clues to expect a quarterback switch to Quinn later in the week.
Another reason is Anderson's abysmal 36.2 passer rating, which is last in the NFL. How much longer can Cleveland go with that type of production from the NFL’s most important position? Quinn was benched quickly after just 10 quarters and a 62.1 passer rating this year. Although the Browns deny it, whether bonus money played a role in Quinn’s benching is up to you to decide.
But the Browns have eight games left in their season to find out if Quinn can play. The former first-round draft pick only has six starts in three years with the Browns. Therefore, the second half of the season should be about discovering whether Quinn has a future in Cleveland or at least a showcase for potential suitors in the offseason.
