Upon Further Review: Steelers

11/13/2012

Revisiting the Pittsburgh Steelers' 16-13 overtime win over the Kansas City Chiefs at Heinz Field:

Lawrence Timmons' 23-yard interception return led to the winning field goal in overtime and saved the NFL's top-ranked defense from an embarrassing defeat.

Before the Chiefs' final drive in regulation, the Steelers had held quarterback Matt Cassel to 92 yards passing. Cassel then completed four passes for 62 yards in the final 1 minute, 51 seconds, including a 27-yarder to Dwayne Bowe to set up the tying field goal for Kansas City.

Overall, it was still a strong night for Pittsburgh's pass defense, which got some help from several dropped passes. Here are some numbers from ESPN Stats & Information about the pass defense:

  • When the Steelers sent five or more pass-rushers Monday, Cassel was 1-for-8 for 5 yards. His 0.6 yards per attempt against such pressure is the lowest for any quarterback with more than two attempts in a game this season.

  • The Steelers sent five or more pass-rushers on 9 of 30 (30.0 percent) drop backs Monday. Over the last four games (all wins), the Steelers have sent five or more pass-rushers on 29.2 percent of drop backs after sending such pressure on 48.9 percent of drop backs in their first five games (highest in NFL).

  • Cassel was 0-for-8 and was sacked once on third down. Cassel’s eight third-down pass attempts without a completion are the most for any quarterback in a single game in the past five seasons.

STAT THAT STICKS: 1,002 -- Rushing yards for Ben Roethlisberger's career after he scrambled 14 yards for a first down in the red zone. He became the 92nd quarterback in NFL history to reach that rushing mark.

OVERHEARD: "We'll take it and we won't apologize for it either. Such is life in the NFL. The guys made the necessary plays to get out of the stadium with a win." Head coach Mike Tomlin after the closer-than-expected win.

WHAT'S NEXT: The Steelers play host to the Ravens on Sunday night. Pittsburgh is 2-2 on prime time this season with wins against Kansas City and Cincinnati and losses at Tennessee and Denver.
