Luckily for the Bengals, the Raiders didn't talk to John Clayton before giving up first- and second-round picks for quarterback Carson Palmer last year.
In his weekly mailbag, Clayton shows how quarterback trades just haven't worked:
There have been 10 trades since 2008 that have involved at least a fourth-round pick. None has produced a playoff appearance in the first season yet. In fact, the only quarterbacks who won more games than they lost during the first year were Brett Favre, who went to the Jets in 2008 and had a 9-7 record, and Jason Campbell, who was 7-5 for the Raiders in 2010.
Palmer is 7-12 with the Raiders, throwing 30 touchdowns and 27 interceptions. The quarterback who replaced Palmer in Cincinnati is Dalton, who is 13-12 with 40 touchdowns and 24 interceptions.
The trade for Palmer certainly hasn't worked out for the Raiders. But it has definitely panned out for the Bengals.
