Heath Miller continues to make progress

September, 11, 2013
PITTSBURGH -- Heath Miller took another step toward returning to action after practicing in full pads Wednesday.

“I did a little bit of everything,” the veteran tight end said after practice.

Miller, the Pittsburgh Steelers’ 2012 MVP, is unlikely to play Monday night at Cincinnati despite the progress he has made from offseason knee surgery. ESPN’s Ed Werder reports that while Miller is doing well the Steelers won’t allow him to come back too early.

“I have an open mind,” Miller said when asked if there is any chance he will play against the Bengals. “I’m sure we’ll make a decision when the time’s appropriate. I just want to keep getting better.”

Miller led the team last season with 71 catches. He also had a career-high 816 receiving yards before tearing multiple ligaments in his right knee in the 15th game of last season.

Steelers tight ends managed just one catch in the team’s 16-9 loss to the Titans last Sunday. The 2.1 rushing yards the Steelers averaged on 15 carries also magnified how much the offense misses Miller.

Along with Miller, the Steelers are being cautious with rookie running back Le'Veon Bell.

Bell said he watched practice on Wednesday after going through his normal rehabilitation exercises.

Bell is recovering from a right midfoot sprain, and he said “I was hoping I would be more advanced than I am now but it is what it is.”

Bell is encouraged that he is on track to returning and said he won’t come back until his foot is fully healed.

“I’m not going to go out there and be 65 or 70 and not look like myself and not really be helping the offense,” Bell said. “I’m going to make sure I’m 100 percent.”

The Steelers were not required to release an injury report on Wednesday since they don’t play until Monday.
