Browns take RB Terrance West in 3rd

May, 9, 2014
BEREA, Ohio -- The pick: Terrance West, RB, Towson

My take: Anytime a player rushes for 2,509 yards, it’s noteworthy. West did just that -- and scored 41 touchdowns (though he said it was "actually 42") -- last season. The yardage total was an NCAA record. Clearly, West can run, and he has some power. At 5-foot-9 and 225 pounds, he’s small and stout. One has to figure that offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan had strong input in this pick. West must be a good fit in the zone-blocking scheme Shanahan runs. He’s a good story, as he walked on at Towson after spending time working in a shoe store. "I’m just a dedicated guy," he said.

Still M.I.A.: The drafting of West might help the run game, but West does not play receiver. It follows the news reported by ESPN’s Chris Mortensen that Nate Burleson has a fractured arm and will miss the rest of the offseason work and the other news that Josh Gordon faces a one-year ban for another failed drug test. A receiver would help at some point.

What’s next: The Browns traded the 106th pick in the draft to move up to get West, so they will start Saturday with the 27th pick in the fourth round, 127th overall.
