Johnny Manziel Camp Daily: Aug. 12

8/12/2014

A day-by-day and honest look at Johnny Manziel's first training camp with the Cleveland Browns:

THE WORK: Manziel was with the first team on Tuesday after working with the backups on Monday. And he had better throws, but not enough of them. Manziel continues to learn as he goes, and it shows. He throws the ball with zip, but his reads aren’t as crisp as Brian Hoyer’s and he’s not as fast with his decisions. What was most interesting about this day were the positive words about Manziel from quarterback coach Dowell Loggains, who approached gushing with his comments while also insisting there’s “not a leader” between Manziel and Hoyer.

GOOD THROW: Manziel made a nice throw on a cross route to Jordan Cameron. He threw confidently and aggressively and had good zip on the ball, which Cameron caught before being able to turn upfield. It was a throw without a rush, but it was still a good, crisp pass.

BAD THROW: Manziel didn’t start well in 11-on-11s. His first throw turned into an interception because of a nice play by Joe Haden, and his second was an overthrow on a deep post thrown into double coverage.

THE WORD: “It’s day to day and I’m not going to comment on who’s ahead. It’s not time to make that decision yet, and there’s a long process before we do.” -- Loggains on which quarterback is ahead.

START CHART: On a 1-to-10 scale, with 10 being Manziel certainly starts the opener, we'll take a look at his chances as he goes through camp.
