Clayton breaks down Steelers' run game
By Jamison Hensley
In John Clayton's Last Call, one of the issues that he addresses is a Steelers ground game that has become relevant again.
Left tackle Max Starks told Clayton that the key is using combinations of man and zone schemes. It also helps that Jonathan Dwyer is a combination of Rashard Mendenhall and Isaac Redman with his ability to bounce outside (like Mendenhall) and run in between the tackles (like Redman).
This is Clayton's take on the run game:
Sometimes it becomes difficult for linemen to block consistently when different types of backs are used during the same series. The Steelers rushed for 140 yards in persistent rain Sunday. Bruce Arians lost his offensive coordinator job in Pittsburgh because he wasn't committed enough to the running game. New offensive coordinator Todd Haley is.
The Steelers, who had ranked among the three worst running teams for most of the season, are now up to No. 21 in the league.
