Chat Rewind: Who could replace Ed Reed?
By Jamison Hensley
Some highlights from today's AFC North chat:
James, nc [via mobile]: I know I'm just wishful thinking, but I sure would love to see DeAngelo Williams in a Steeler jersey. He is a far better running back than any running back they have on there roster, although i still like Jonathan Dwyer.
Jamison Hensley (ESPN): Judging the Steelers' cap room, I highly doubt they can sign any decent free-agent running back. They'll cost too much. Have to get a RB in the draft.
steve (charleston, sc): What is your take on the Flacco tag situation? Exclusive or non exclusive? Is this even a story or just ESPN creating a story?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN): I don't think the Ravens will take any chances with Flacco. If they put the tag on him, it would be the exclusive one. I still think they can get a long-term deal done by March 4.
Caleb (Cleveland): What 3 specific free agents would you pursue if you were Banner and Lombardi?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN): Bowe, Spencer and Dawson. Not sure if they can realistically sign any of them. But that would be my wish list if I was the Browns.
Ravens Fan (Baltimore): In a perfect world, if you were going to draft a safety to replace Ed Reed, would you go for the kid out of Texas or Elam from Florida?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN): Elam covers a lot of ground like Reed, so he would be a good fit. I also like Elam's anticipation. The knock on him is size, but Reed isn't the biggest guy either.
Brenton (Columbus, Ohio): Do you see the Bengals actually spending money on their guys who are free agents and others outside the organization? Seems to me they are close to being a very good team and with a couple pieces here and there, they could make a deep playoff run.
Jamison Hensley (ESPN): They do have to spend 89 percent of their cap. But most of that money will probably go to retaining Andre Smith and Michael Johnson as well as extending Geno Atkins and A.J. Green. The Bengals need to spend some money to get a strong safety and outside linebacker.
Chuck (Turtle Creek Pa): What is the chance that the Steelers will draft a WR or RB in the first round??
Jamison Hensley (ESPN): The Steelers will go defense in the first round.
James (London): Do you see there being any movement in the RFA market?? Players like Pitta/Dickson, Art Jones, Steve McLendon and Emmanuel Sanders may get a lower tender from cash-strapped teams. Could you see the Browns (or any other team) making a play for them if they're given a 2nd round (or lower) tender??
Jamison Hensley (ESPN): I don't see any movement on the RFA market. It wouldn't surprise me if the Ravens reach a long-term deal with Pitta. Sanders' injury history will scare off teams.
Steve (Ohio): So what do you think about the rumors of Matt Moore to the Browns?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN): He would be an upgrade at backup quarterback. But he wouldn't threaten Weeden's job. I've never been a big Matt Moore fan.
oshua (ID): what do you think about Pollard's remarks about the NFL fading out in 30 years?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN): Don't believe him.
