Free-agency tracker: Baltimore Ravens
By Jamison Hensley
This week, the AFC North blog will be taking a look at what each team has done now that the first wave of NFL free agency is over.
Signed (nine players): OLB Elvis Dumervil (Broncos), FS Michael Huff (Raiders), DL Chris Canty (Giants), DE Marcus Spears (Cowboys), SS James Ihedigbo, CB Chris Johnson, WR David Reed and LS Morgan Cox. QB Joe Flacco was re-signed before free agency began.
Lost (nine players): LB Ray Lewis (retired), FS Ed Reed (Texans), WR Anquan Boldin (traded to 49ers), OLB Paul Kruger (Browns), ILB Dannell Ellerbe (Dolphins), CB Cary Williams (Eagles), C Matt Birk (retired), SS Bernard Pollard (released, Titans) and G Bobbie Williams (released).
Top remaining free agents: OT Bryant McKinnie, NT Ma'ake Kemoeatu, TE Billy Bajema and S Sean Considine.
What's next: The Ravens filled half of their pressing needs this week when they reached deals with pass-rusher Elvis Dumervil and safety Michael Huff. Defensively, the biggest void is at inside linebacker. Ray Lewis retired, Dannell Ellerbe left in free agency and Jameel McClain (spinal cord contusion) has yet to be cleared. The Ravens may wait to see if a top inside linebacker prospect (perhaps Alec Ogletree or Manti Te'o) fall to them in the bottom of the first round. If Baltimore fails to get one in the draft, the Ravens could pick up a veteran free agent after it. Karlos Dansby could still be available, and Rolando McClain might be released by the Raiders at that point.
On offense, the Ravens have yet to address the loss of wide receiver Anquan Boldin. Owner Steve Biciotti recently said a committee is going to fill the void. But the options -- Tandon Doss, David Reed, Deonte Thompson and Tommy Streeter -- are viable ones for the No. 4 wide receiver spot, not a starting one. Just like inside linebacker, the Ravens can try to find a wide receiver early in the draft or pick up a veteran (along the lines of Kevin Walter) after the draft.
Existing needs: Inside linebacker, wide receiver and offensive tackle.
